The WIPO Conversation on Intellectual Property (IP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) was established in 2019 to bring together diverse stakeholders in a policy dialogue to discuss the impact of Al on IP. By dealing AI issues across IP rights, it is intended to provide Member States with an overarching view of the impact of Al on all IP rights.
The Conversation is in an open, inclusive process intended to provide its stakeholders with a leading, global forum to discuss the impact of AI on all IP rights and to bridge the existing information gap between AI players and regulators in this fast moving and complex field.
WIPO is currently developing preliminary considerations for IP policy on a number of questions raised by AI for IP policy for further discussion.
The date and the topic of the Fourth Session of the WIPO Conversation on IP and AI will be announced in due course.
Background
WIPO held the First Session of the WIPO Conversation on IP and AI in September 2019 to discuss the impact of Al on IP policy, with a view to collectively formulating the questions that policymakers need to ask.
In December 2019, WIPO published a draft Issues Paper on IP policy and AI, and started a public consultation process inviting feedback to help define the most-pressing questions likely to face IP policy makers as AI increases in importance. Over 250 submissions were received in the consultation process.
In May 2020, a revised Issues Paper on IP policy and AI was published taking into account the submissions received.
A Second Session of the WIPO Conversation on IP and AI took place in July 2020 discussing some of the issues set out in the Revised Paper. Over 2,000 people from 130 countries, including representatives of Member States, academic, scientific and private organizations joined the meeting in a virtual format.
WIPO held the Third Session of the Conversation on IP and AI on November 4, 2020, in a virtual format with more than 1,500 registered participants from 133 countries.
